چکیده

This paper studies some newly observed phenomena with indefinite descriptions when they appear as complements of prepositional phrases (PPs). We show that in many such cases the indefinite does not receive the traditional existential interpretation, and its quantificational force is sensitive to the identity of the preposition. Such cases of quantificational variability are explained by elaborating previous theories of semantic incorporation. In our proposal, predicative indefinites are direct arguments of the spatial component in the semantics of the PP. The semantics of spatial prepositions is directly responsible for the quantificational interpretation of predicative indefinites that appear as PP complements. Using earlier studies of locative prepositions, especially (Zwarts and Winter 2000), we analyze the effects that monotonicity and (anti-)additivity of prepositions have on the quantificational interpretation of predicative indefinites in their complement. These semantic observations are supported by standard tests from entailments and acceptability with negative polarity items.

Non-Existential Indefinites and Semantic Incorporation of PP Complements

Indefinites that appear as complements in prepositional phrases show some systematic variations in their interpretation, which to the best of our knowledge have not been observed before. Consider the contrasts between the following pairs: (1) a. The house is close to a lake. b. The house is far from a lake. (2) a. The house is less than/at most 20m from a lake. b. The house is more than/at leas...

What Does It Mean for an Indefinite to Be Presuppositional?

The paper is concerned with the nature of the presuppositionality involved in “strong” (or presuppositional) indefinite noun phrases in general, and Turkish accusative marked indefinites in particular. It investigates the semantics of Turkish accusative indefinites with regards to the categories of existential import, contextual restrictedness (or D-linking) and semantic scope, within the DRT-b...

Far From Obvious: the Semantics of Locative Indefinites

Simple locative sentences show a variety of pseudo-quantificational interpretations. Some locatives give the impression of universal quantification over parts of objects, others involve existential quantification, and yet others cannot be characterized by either of these quantificational terms. This behavior is explained by virtually all semantic theories of locatives. What has not been previou...

Evidence for non-existential readings of locative indefinites

While (1) only requires that there exists a gas station nearby, the prominent interpretation of (2) is that all gas stations are far away. We examine two accounts of this kind of contrast. Under one possible explanation, far from decomposes into its negated antonym (henceforth Implicit Negation, or IN, cf. in another context Heim [1]). Under an alternative account, indefinites denote properties...

What Makes Choice Natural?

The idea to use choice functions in the semantic analysis of indefinites has recently gained increasing attention among linguists and logicians. A central linguistic motivation for the revived interest in this logical perspective, which can be traced back to the epsilon calculus of Hilbert & Bernays (1939), is the observation by Reinhart (1992, 1997) that choice functions can account for the pr...
